The Willie Brown Blues Benefit
The Time Has Come to Give back to the Blues. Here’s How We Are Doing It.
Willie Brown, one of the most talented, gifted, underrated, amazing, spectacular delta blues musicians to ever live, died a lonely death, and is currently buried in an unmarked grave in The Good Shepherd Church in Tunica County, MS. His impact on the blues, rock and roll, and all other forms of music is highly underrated. He played with all the greats including Robert Johnson, Son House, and countless others. The purpose of The Willie Brown Blues Benefit was to raise the $2100 needed to get Willie Brown a long overdue headstone. Every single penny raised at the benefit will be used to get Willie Brown his marker.
So how did the benefit go? It was amazing. Spectacular. The turnout was good. On average, I would say there was between 100 and 150 people in attendance. Everyone was friendly, and very generous. The show started right at 4, and after a brief stage announcement, Eddie Wright took the stage. His blend of electrifying the old style blues was remarkable, and he effortlessly imitated an old 78 record slowing down and speeding up using his slide.
Afterwards, The Backwater Blues Band Rocked the house! Playing a mix of original songs and covers, no one can say these guys don’t play the blues. The performance was on point, and got the crowd into the evening. Next, Sean Chambers took the stage – with – Damon Fowler! Talk about an all-star lineup, seeing these two share the stage is a treat most people never get to see. They played an amazing version of Little Wing, and had Cody Benecasa and Branson Welsh join in as well. Watching these guys trade licks kept almost every jaw on the floor for the entire set.
Lee Pons rounded out the night, jamming away on the piano like he was born to do. In the end, he was joined by the Backwater Blues Band for a phenomenal version of Crossroads, calling out to Willie Brown. I was very proud to be a part of that night – and I have a feeling ol’ Willie would be proud too.
