Robert Johnson – A three piece band?!?
I have to admit, I am a little tired of writing about good old RJ. It seems like this blog has gone from a trip summary, to a blues historic site, to a Robert Johnson site. But, as they say, give the people what they want….
Somewhat new reports are surfacing that Robert Johnson could have been playing in a three piece band shortly before his death. Though it is known he sometimes played with other musicians on stage (after all, he was playing with Rice Miller aka Sonny Boy Williamson II the night he was poisoned), it was never really known whether or not RJ played in an actual band.
New research has revealed that Robert Johnson did play several gigs with a band. In fact, the drummer for his band (I have the name of the drummer, it just escapes me) even had “Robert Johnson” stenciled on his bass drum. It is reported that Robert played guitar and sang, with a drummer and a second guitarist providing accompaniment. Although it is uncertain whether or not this band was amplified, it is now certain a band existed.
This is enlightening new information that is somewhat being proven as we speak. As it becomes increasingly difficult to unearth such facts, I can’t help but find them intriguing. I will continue to dig up the names of the band members- though I do believe I have them somewhere – and add them to this post.
Robert Johnson never ceases to amaze…
